Spotlight On The Ordinary

by Thomas A. Droleskey

Reaction to the travesty that took place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday, August 29, 2009, the Feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, continues to mount from the "usual suspects" among the ranks of "conservative" Catholics who are as of yet attached to the structures of the counterfeit church of conciliarism. Most of these "conservatives" are denouncing the American "bishops" for their praising the likes of a man, the late United States Senator Edward Moore Kennedy (D-Massachusetts), who went to his grave as an unreconstructed, unrepentant supporter of baby-killing under cover of the civil law.

As one who used to sing the old songs of berating the "bad" American "bishops" who were "undermining" the "holy, "suffering" "Pope" John Paul II, I know these refrains my heart. Like any other old song that is played over and over and over again, however, the song of the "bad" American "bishops" of today who are said to be "undermining" the "pope," Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, who is supposedly engineering a "quiet revolution" back to the path of Tradition, is a tired one. If you will pardon the allusion made by one who grew up with phonographs and vinyl records, the phonograph needle is stuck in the groove of the record on which these old songs ("if only the 'pope' knew about these things," "the 'pope' is powerless to do anything about these things," "the bad 'bishops' have no respect for the teachings of the good 'pope,'" "the 'pope' is surrounded by bad men who prevent him from acting as he would like to do," etc.) are recorded for constant playing.

It is time, my friends, to break this record in half as these songs are nothing but self-delusional lies that have nothing to do with the reality of our situation.

For the plain truth is, of course, that the "good 'pope'" who is said to be suffering so much from the "bad" 'bishops" has chosen to retain, appoint or promote these "bishops" in their positions.

The "good 'pope'" has said nothing in the past one hundred forty-three days to defend the integrity of the Catholic Faith following German "archbishop" Robert Zollitsch's open denial that Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ died to make atonement for our sins.

The "good 'pope'" stood by silently as the administration of the University of Notre Dame du Lac in Notre Dame, Indiana, chose to invite the pro-abortion Barack Hussein Obama to give its 2008 commencement address and to bestow an honorary doctorate upon him.

The "good 'pope'" said, "A blessing on all your work and on you" to Obama when the latter visited him in the Vatican on Friday, July 10, 2009.

The "good 'pope'" has stood silently by as his semi-official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has praised John Lennon, Barack Hussein Obama, John Calvin, Harry Potter, and Michael Jackson.

The "good 'pope'" imparted a "blessing" upon the terminally ill Edward Moore Kennedy without telling him of his responsibility to abjure his support of grave evils, including baby-killing and special "rights" for those steeped in unrepentant sins of perversity, under cover of the civil law.

The "good 'pope'" has called mosques as "sacred" places and as "jewels" that stand out across the face of the earth.

The "good 'pope'" has "knighted"--and/or awarded medals to--pro-abortion and pro-perversity Talmudic rabbis.

The "good 'pope'" has made the pro-abortion and pro-perversity President of France, Nicholas Sarkozy, a Catholic, a "canon" of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

The "good 'pope'" said that the Protestant syncretist Roger Schutz had "attained eternal joy" in Heaven shortly after his murder in 2005 even though Schutz never converted to the Catholic Church before his death.

The "good 'pope'" has invited members of Protestant and Orthdox and Talmudic organizations to address various groups of Catholics, including the the triennial "synod of bishops" in Rome, conveying the belief that what appears to most people to be the Catholic Church, she who is the sole repository of everything contained in the Deposit of Faith and thus has nothing to "learn" from those who are outside of her maternal bosom, does indeed have something to "learn" about God and His Divine Revelation from non-Catholics. This is false.

The "good 'pope'" has endorsed the disproved ideology of theistic evolutionism and has cited the work of the heretical Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.

The "good 'pope'" has, in full violation of the binding precepts of the First and Second Commandments, personally esteemed the symbols of false religions and praised their nonexistent ability to "contribute" to the "building" of the "better world."

The "good 'pope'" has rejected what he calls disparagingly "the ecumenism of the return" and the Catholic Church's official condemnation of the falsehoods of religious liberty and the separation of Church and State.

The "good 'pope'" has blasphemed the Third Person of the Most Blessed Trinity, God the Holy Ghost, by saying that it was "necessary to learn" that dogmatic truths can be understood differently at different times, meaning that God the Holy Ghost kept this "truth" from us until Ratzinger/Benedict's December 22, 2005, Christmas address, meaning also that the Fathers of the [First] Vatican Council had it wrong when they anathematized anyone who said that such a philosophical absurdity could be true. (See Ratzinger's War Against Catholicism.)

The "bad" "bishops" and "priests" who indemnified Edward Moore Kennedy in life and who eulogized him as a "good" Catholic after his death operate with the full approval of the "good 'pope.'" When are those who are upset with the "bad 'bishops'" going to realize that this is the actual truth of the matter?

At this late date, good readers, it is time to recognize that the problems we face are not the result of "bad 'bishops,'" but the logical consequence of a false religion, conciliarism, that has arisen out of the dust of the theological and liturgical and moral disaster that was the "Second" Vatican Council and the multiple disasters wrought by by the "magisterium" of the conciliar "popes."

Another harsh truth that so many "conservatives" and Motarians attached to the counterfeit church of conciliarism do not want to recognize or to accept is that the travesty that took place three days ago in the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston, Massachusetts, is nothing out of the ordinary. Indeed, it is quite ordinary. The death of Edward Moore Kennedy simply helped to put a spotlight on the ordinary that is to be found in the pastoral praxis of the counterfeit church of conciliarism.

To wit, although the counterfeit church of conciliarism continues on a de jure basis the Catholic Church's prohibition of eulogies for the dead during a funeral liturgy, the de facto praxis of the conciliar church permits such eulogies ad infinitum, ad nauseam. I have witnessed this first-hand. I am sure that many of you have done so as well. What happened three days ago is not anomalous in the pastoral praxis of the counterfeit church of conciliarism and its Protestant and Masonic Novus Ordo service. The Kennedy "Mass of Christian Burial" only put a spotlight on the ordinary practice found in many places in the conciliar church.

To wit, not one word about Purgatory was spoken during the "Mass of Christian Burial" for the late Edward Moore Kennedy that took place on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston, Massachusetts. Although Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI has been very careful not to endorse in explicit terms the heresy of "universal salvation" that was at the heart of the false theology of his late mentor, Father Hans Urs von Balthasar, the essence of this heresy permeates the conciliar structures as one priest and presbyter after tell mourning relatives of a deceased person that a "loving" God would never send anyone to Hell. (They're right, of course, but not in the way that they mean. The true God does not send anyone to Hell. He permits people to choose to go there all on their own as a result of the free will choices they made in life and did not repent by the time they drew their last breaths. God so respects our human free will that He will not impose Himself in death upon those who have not chosen for Him in life as He has revealed Himself to us through His Catholic Church, the sole means of human salvation.)

The scandalous travesty at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston, Massachusetts three days ago was simply another day at the conciliar office in the "ordinary" life of an ordinary apostate sect in its season that is called "ordinary time." This particular travesty simply gave a spotlight to the scandal that is, in se, the Protestant and Masonic Novus Ordo service that is so offensive to Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and so harmful to the souls for whom He shed every single drop of His Most Precious Blood to redeem.

There was really nothing new at all in the travesty of three days ago. Pro-aborts have been buried with honors rather consistently over the past thirty-five years or so.

The late New York State Senator Edward Speno was permitted to have a "Mass of Christian Burial" at Saint Raphael Church in East Meadow, Long Island, New York, in 1972, two years after he had voted in favor of the bill to permit surgical baby-killing-on-demand in the first trimester of pregnancy.

The late Thomas P. O'Neill was eulogized as a splendid Catholic by the man who is now the conciliar archpriest of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the protector of perverted priests, including one who started an organization to promote something so unspeakable that it will not be repeated here, by the name of Bernard "Cardinal" Law, in 1994 despite O'Neill's constant support for abortion "rights."

The "late" Father Robert Drinan, S.J., known as "Father Death," who served in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1971, January 3, 1981 (endorsing one Barney Frank to be his successor when the conciliar Vatican forced him to refrain from seeking a sixth term in 1980), remained a priest in "good standing" in the conciliar church until his death on January 28, 2007 despite his unrepentant support of surgical baby-killing under cover of law, including the procedure known as "partial-birth abortion."

Drinan was also instrumental in helping the Kennedy clan to plot a strategy to separate their "private" beliefs about abortion from their public policies ( See WSJ.com - Opinion: How Support for Abortion Became Kennedy Dogma.) Drinan even received an award from Saint Joseph's College in Patchogue, New York, in the late-1990s for his work in behalf of "peace and justice," a travesty that I covered for The Wanderer at the time. Drinan's "Mass of Christian Burial" was held at the Jesuit church in downtown Washington, D.C., Saint Aloysius Church, on February 1, 2007. Edward Moore Kennedy was one of those who "eulogized" "Father Death. Nancy Pelosi was another:

Sen. Edward Kennedy noted, "Here on earth, God's work must be our own" and said that Drinan did that work "armed with moral clarity and courage." Speaker Pelosi said of Drinan, "It was because of his faith that he was one of our greatest champions for human rights," and she quoted him as telling Georgetown students "to go forth into society not as mere legal tradesmen, but as moral architects." (Robert Drinan, Infanticide, and the "Unthinkable" | First Things)

Edward Moore Kennedy believed that supporting abortion was "God's work." Ah, yes, just some more of Kennedy's "accomplishments" praised by Sean "Cardinal" O'Malley (see Sean O'Malley: Coward and Hypocrite).

The late Associate Justice William Brennan of the Supreme Court of the United States of America was given a "Mass of Christian Burial" at Saint Matthew's Church in 1997. This was permitted by the then conciliar "archbishop" of Washington, D.C., James "Cardinal" Hickey, despite the fact that Brennan cast one of the seven affirmative votes in the cases of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, January 22, 1973, and despite te fact that Brennan served also as one of the seven affirmative votes in the case of Griswold v. Connecticut, June 7, 1965, that invalidated a long-unenforced Connecticut state statute that banned the sale of contraceptives to married couples, a case that provided a good deal of the "legal reasoning," such as it was, for the Roe and Doe cases, especially by inventing the so-called "right to privacy" as found in what were called the "penumbras" (little shadows of emanations) from could be found various provisions of the Bill of Rights and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment's liberty and due process of law clauses.

The late United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-New York) was permitted to have a "Mass of Christian Burial" at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in the Borough of Manhattan of the City of New York, New York, in 2003 despite his consistent support for abortion "rights," mitigated, some believe, because he did vote to partially ban partial-birth abortions. To oppose a particular form of child-killing while maintaining the "right" of women to murder their children by other means does not constitute a "mitigation" of one's support for a sin that cries out to Heaven for vengeance.

This list could go on, as I am sure that you realize, rather interminably.

In other words, my few readers, the scandalous travesty that took place in the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a travesty that was planned in large part by the pro-abortion Edward Moore Kennedy himself, is rather ordinary in the life of the counterfeit church of conciliarism. This one just happened to be very much in the public spotlight.

What the scandalous travesty of three days ago has done, however, is to make it more difficult for "conservative" and traditionally-minded Catholics all across and up and down the vast expanse of the ecclesiastical divide to seek to converse with their "liberal" or non-practicing, unbelieving Catholic relatives and friends. All such a "liberal" or non-practicing and unbelieving Catholic has to do to stop any and all criticism of Barack Hussein Obama or of any Catholic in public life who supports such evils as contraception and abortion and "marriage" for persons engaged in unrepentant acts of perversity in violation of the Sixth and Ninth Commandments is to hold up their arm in protest and say something like this:

"Ted Kennedy was buried with honors as a Catholic in good standing. He was praised by priest after priest, including by two cardinals. The pope gave him a blessing without saying a word about these matters. It is clear that I can believe in whatever I want and remain a Catholic in good standing until my dying breath. That is what a compassionate God teaches us, not your angry God of judgmentalness and division. Do you know more than the pope?"

The scandalous travesty of three days ago has also made it more difficult for believing Catholics across the vast expanse of the ecclesiastical divide to convince "pro-life," "pro-family" Protestants that the Catholic Church is the true Church. A "pro-life," "pro-family" Protestant might respond as follows:

"Your popes say that they are pro-life. What does this mean? They and their bishops praise pro-aborts like Kennedy. Most of your bishops support Obama's statism, including his nationalization of health-care. Your pope has given Obama a blessing on all his work and on him. His newspaper has praised Harry Potter and Michael Jackson. How can your church be the true church?"

If you think that these scenarios are outlandish, think again. It was three and one-half years ago that I addressed a group of "conservatives" in Edmond, Oklahoma. Most of these "conservatives" were Protestants. The master of ceremonies told me, after my short presentation on the Social Reign of Christ the King and against the spirit of Judeo-Masonry, "My pappy is the oldest living past grand master of the Siloam lodge." Another man was pretending to sharpen a knife during my presentation to demonstrate how much he hated my remarks, which ended with a plea to all non-Catholics present to convert to the true Church.

One of the Protestants, a former talk radio host in the area, shouted a question to ask me where was this "true Church of yours?" as he lambasted the fact that Ted Kennedy and John Kerry and Mario Cuomo were in "good standing" in what I understand now to be the false church of conciliarism. A Baptist minister asked a thoughtful question in a respectful way to have me explain how Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II could say that evolution was "more than a theory." These people see the scandals caused by the conciliarists and are reaffirmed in their own false beliefs. Don't think for a moment that what happened at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help three days ago won't harden the deep-seated anti-Catholicism of these Protestants that has been aided and abetted by the conciliar revolutionaries.

And it was just yesterday that a former colleague of mine, now working for a think tank of naturalism, wrote the following to me after I had written to him to comment on an article that he had written:

I cannot say that I have much more hope for the Catholic Church in America than I have for higher education, especially after watching the Kennedy festivities over the weekend, which proved that liberalism is taking on the air of religion as the caretaker of the poor and hopeless.

The conciliarists blaspheme God by presenting themselves as the representatives of the Catholic Church, scandalizing Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Alas, all one needs to do to be scandalized is go into a formerly Catholic parish now in conciliar captivity and to observe the travesty that is the Novus Ordo even in the most "conservative" of environments, no less those where free rein is given to "improvisations" not officially "authorized" by the counterfeit church of conciliarism (see Voices From Hell). The counterfeit church has more in common with the amalgamation of beliefs and practices of the Anglican sect than it does with the unity of belief and practice that is of the essence of the Catholic Church.

Those who seek to indemnify the "good 'pope'" ought to consider the fact that he has forced one of his "conservative" "bishops," Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pennsylvania, to walk the conciliar gang plank after he, "Bishop" Martino, was termed "divisive" for his criticism of the pro-abortion Vice President of the United States of America, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., a Catholic who was born in Scranton and who remains in perfectly "good standing" in the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, and for his trying to keep supporters of perversity from speaking on the campuses of once Catholic colleges within the boundaries of his diocese. bad things out of his diocese. "Bishop" Martino also threatened to deny what purports, albeit falsely, Holy Communion to United States Senator Robert Casey (D-Pennsylvania) for his floor vote in favor of the confirmation of the pro-abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius, the former Governor of the State of Kansas who profited from political donations made to her by the late late-term baby-killer George Tiller, as Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

"Bishop" Martino also laid down the law when parishioners of a parish in his diocese were discussing the timid statement issued by the United States Conference of "Catholic 'Bishops'" about "political responsibility" that says, in essence, abortion is but one issue among many for voters to consider when deciding who to support in an election:

Last year, he arrived unannounced at a parish whose members were discussing a document on political responsibility recently issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

He ordered the discussion closed, telling the gathering, "No USCCB document is relevant in this diocese. The USCCB doesn't speak for me. The only relevant document," he said, was his letter on politics, which he had ordered read at all parishes. (Scranton's Bishop Martino reportedly resigning; see also Benedict accepts resignation of Scranton bishop for health reasons.)

"Bishop" Martino, who cited "fatigue" and "insomnia" caused by the controversies engendered by his strict stand against pro-aborts in public life, was, unfortunately, little better than his predecessor, James Clifford Timlin, in dealing with perverted members of his clergy, and he remains a thorough conciliarist supportive of the conciliar agenda, including the Protestant and Masonic Novus Ordo service. It is rather telling, however, that he was, in effect, shown the way to the gang plank on the Pirate Ship Ratzinger for good faith efforts to try to discipline wayward Catholics and to defend at least some truths of the Holy Faith with vigor no matter the criticism that he received for doing so. Just another ordinary day in the life of the counterfeit church of conciliarism.

"Bishop" Martino is out. The likes of Roger Mahony and George Niederauer, who gave what purports to be "Holy Communion" to a group of perverts known as the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" in a Novus Ordo service in 2006 and who has praised Brokeback Mountain, a celebration of perversity, as he has refused to discipline Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-California), and Timothy "I want to be a happy 'bishop'" Dolan, who praised the work of the pro-abortion Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai Brith, and Howard Hubbard and Edward Kmiec and Peter Rosazza and and Robert Lynch and Donald Wuerl and John Favolora and Michael Sheehan and Wilton Gregory, as well as countless others, are allowed to remain in power to continue their work of deforming souls and reaffirming Catholic pro-aborts in public life as they adhere to the very "United States Conference of Catholic Bishops" documents that "Bishop" Martino said were not relevant in the Diocese of Scranton. Just another quite ordinary day in the life of the counterfeit church of conciliarism.

Although it took me far, far too long to recognize the simple truth (and it is a simple truth!) that the Catholic Church cannot give us defective liturgies or false, ambiguous or contradictory doctrines, I do nevertheless pray fervently for men such as "Bishop" Martino and others of like mind still attached to the belief that the counterfeit church of conciliarism is the Catholic Church find their way out of the false church that scandalizes Catholics and non-Catholics alike as it suborns in its pastoral praxis the breaking of each of the Ten Commandments.

Mr. Michael Reardon, whose moving story of how his desire to have the late Michael Davies send his wife a red flower as an affirmation of his, Mr. Reardon's, stance that Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI was an antipope and that the counterfeit church of conciliarism is an ape of the Catholic Church, sent this note out to a list composed of family members and friends, kindly giving me permission to republish his remarks here:

As related in the article (Beacon of Social Justice?) below by Dr. Droleskey, Judie Brown, founder and President of the American Life League, wrote to Cardinal Sean O'Malley prior to the funeral of Ted Kennedy that,."If this funeral proceeds as planned, Senator Kennedy will have spit one more time on Christ, this time from the casket."  I will add that anyone who possesses a modicum of grace should see clearly that the Catholic Church could never sanction such a sacrilege, such a scandal. The "church" that emerged from Vatican II is not the Catholic Church, with its false popes and false bishops, and anyone who accepts it as such and recognized these false shepherds are themselves not members of the one true Church. They, along with Kennedy, Ratzinger and O'Malley, spit on Christ.

Strong words. The hour, however, is very late. We see sacrilege after sacrilege being committed by Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI and his "bishops." Travesties are part of the ordinary life of the counterfeit church of conciliarism. People yet sit and wait to "see" if there is some "sign" that the conciliar "popes" have been legitimate. They wait to see if the "excesses" of the "Second" Vatican Council can be "corrected."

How many people understood on Good Friday the horror of what was happening to God Himself in the Flesh? How many people just sat and watched? the horrors that our sins imposed upon our Divine Redeemer without being at all moved? Isn't it the same today as Our Lord's Mystical Body, the Church Militant on earth, is torn asunder by the sacrileges and apostasies and travesties of conciliarism? People just sit and watch as they wait for a "sign."

Consider this vision of Venerable Mary of Agreda describing the tortures that our sins imposed upon the God-Man, tortures that did not move the hearts of those watching them being imposed to conversion:

Presently one of the executioners seized the hand of Jesus our Savior and placed it upon the auger-hole, while another hammered a large and rough nail through the palm. The veins and sinews were torn, and the bones of the sacred hand, which made the heavens and ll that exists, were forced apart. When they stretched out the other hand, they found that it did not reach up to the auger-hole; for the sinews of the other arm had been shortened and the executioners had maliciously set the holes too far apart, as I have mentioned above. In order to overcome the difficulty, they took the chain, with which our Savior had been bound in the garden, and looping one end through a ring around his wrist, they, with unheard of cruelty, pulled the hand over the hole and fastened it with another nail. Thereupon they seized his feet, and placing them one above the other, they tied the same chain around both and stretched them with barbarous ferocity down to the third hole. Then they drove through both feet a large nail into the Cross. Thus the sacred body, in which dwelled the Divinity, was nailed motionless to the holy Cross, and the handiwork of his deified members, formed by the Holy Ghost, was so stretched and torn asunder, that the bones of his body, dislocated and forced from their natural position, could all be counted. The bones of his breast, of his shoulders and arms, and of his whole body yielded to the cruel violence and were torn from their sinews.

Then they dragged the lower end of the Cross with the crucified God near to the hole, wherein it was to be planted. Some of them getting under the upper part of the Cross with their shoulders, other pushing upward with their halberds and lances, they raised the Savior on his Cross and fastened its foot in the hole the had drilled into the ground. Thus our true life and salvation now hung in the air upon the sacred wood in full view of the innumerable multitudes of different nations and countries. I must not omit mentioning another barbarity inflicted upon the Lord as they raised Him: for some of them placed the sharp points of their lances and halberds to his body and fearfully lacerating Him under the armpits in helping to push the Cross into position. At this spectacle new cries of protest arose with still more vehemence and confusion from the multitude of people. The Jews blasphemed, the kind-hearted lamented, the strangers were astounded, some of them called the attention of bystanders to the proceedings, others turned away their heads in horror and pity; others took to themselves a warning from this spectacle of suffering, and still others proclaimed Him a just Man. All these different sentiments were like arrows piercing the heart of the afflicted Mother. The sacred body now opened up, to which Isaias invites us to hasten with joy to quench our thirst and wash off the stains of our sins (Is. 12, 3). No one shall be excused who does not quickly approach to drink of them. (Venerable Mary of Agreda, A Popular Abridgement of the Mystical City of God, pp. 556-557.)

People watched and waited on Good Friday as they saw the horrors that our sins caused Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer in His Sacred Humanity and that caused Our Lady's Immaculate Heart to be pierced through and through with the Fourth through Seventh Swords of Sorrow. People watch and wait today as Our Lord and His Deposit of Faith are mocked in ceremonies that purport to be Catholic. What will it take?

Many of us were, as noted just before, "slackers" who refused to respond to the graces that Our Lady sent to us to see the ordinary, everyday horrors of conciliarism and to flee from them with alacrity. There are those today who continue to be slackers. We must, however, continue to pray for them as we make reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus through His Most Blessed Mother's Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart for our sins and those of the whole world, praying as many Rosaries each day as our states-in-life permit. We cannot be indifferent to the ordinary, everyday horrors of conciliarism. We cannot have any association with the conciliar robber barons and their falsehoods and travesties and apostasies and sacrileges.

We must always keep uppermost in our minds the fact that this is the time from all eternity that God has willed for us to be alive. The graces that He won for us on the wood of the Holy Cross by the shedding of every single drop of His Most Precious Blood that flow into our hearts and souls through the loving hands of Our Lady, she who is the Mediatrix of All Graces, are sufficient for us to prosper spiritually unto eternity in this time of apostasy and betrayal. The final victory belongs to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Although I have cited this quoted from Pope Pius XI's Quas Primas, December 11, 1925, about eighty times on this site, it is worth doing so again:

We may well admire in this wonderful wisdom of the Providence of God, Who, ever bringing good out of evil, has from time to time suffered the faith and piety of men to grow weak, and allowed Catholic truth to be attacked by false doctrines, but always with the result that truth has afterwards shone out with greater splendor, and that men’s faith, aroused from its lethargy, has shown itself more vigorous than before . . . . But if the faithful were generally to understand that it behooves them ever to fight courageously under the banner of Christ their King, then, fired with apostolic zeal, they would strive to win over to their Lord those hearts that are bitter and estranged from Him, and would valiantly defend His rights.
