Shameful Affections

by Thomas A. Droleskey

The devil knows how to advance his agenda of evil, diverting the rational creatures of the One he hates, the Blessed Trinity, with all manner of distractions as he goes about his business of sowing the seeds of spiritual shipwreck. Mrs. Randy Engel's new book, The Rite of Sodomy, discusses the ways in which the devil and his fellow fallen angels insinuated themselves into the lives of bishops and priests, thus helping to corrupt the context in which the Mass itself was offered to most Catholics as well as corrupting the teaching of doctrine as perversity and abnormality were presented as morally acceptable while those who condemned objectively immoral acts were deemed to be intolerant, judgmental, and bigoted. Most Catholics, seduced by the wiles of the adversary as he worked to destroy the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church and to make ambiguous that which is quite clear and unequivocal, the Deposit of Faith Our Lord entrusted solely to the Catholic Church, have accepted this diabolical insinuation into episcopal mansions and chancery offices and rectories and schools and universities and seminaries without so much as a moment's hesitation. Indeed, many have been the instances in which priests who have been caught in scandalous behavior have been applauded, loudly and longly, by their parishioners once they have returned to their "ministries."

Rome has done nothing as the sodomite agenda has produced a sodomite culture in most Catholic milieus in this country and around the world. Oh, all right, Rome only does something when people such as Stephen Brady and the organization he founded ten years ago, Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc., expose some episcopal and clerical malefactors and document, sometimes repeatedly, their contempt for the laws of God and the good of the souls for whom Our Lord shed every single drop of His Most Precious Blood on the wood of the Holy Cross. Even then, however, "action" from Rome is usually taken long after the facts in a given case have been well-documented and thus beyond dispute. And it is not infrequently the case that the episcopal and clerical malefactors who get slapped on the wrist by Rome return to some form of episcopal or priestly ministry within a short time thereafter.

To wit, the notoriously corrupt Bishop Daniel G. Ryan, whose own perverse activities in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois undergirded an entire atmosphere of doctrinal dissent and liturgical profanations, got to lay his dirty hands on children during Novus Ordo confirmation ceremonies for just about three years after his forced resignation in 1999, which came three years after Stephen Brady had written to Ryan demanding his resignation because of his abusing two of his own priests (and consorting with men who made money by selling themselves, two of whom I interviewed for The Wanderer back in 1997 and 1998). Bishop Patrick Ziemann, the Bishop of Santa Rosa, had to resign in disgrace in 1999.

Bishops who have demonstrated great sympathy for the homosexualist cause and/or who have covered up the crimes of perverted priests so as to place the bodies and souls of Catholics of all ages in jeopardy, both temporally and eternally, get to retire as bishops in good standing or actually get promoted. The current Prefect of the Congregation of the Faith, William Cardinal Levada, sought to protect perverted priests in the Archdiocese of Portland and the Archdiocese of San Francisco before being appointed by Benedict XVI to succeed himself as prefect of what was once called the Holy Office. Levada, part of the network of sodomite-friendly bishops that came out of Saint John's Seminary in Camarillo, California, including Roger Cardinal Mahony, the Archbishop of Los Angeles, was succeeded as Archbishop of Sodom, er, San Francisco, by Salt Lake City Bishop George Niederauer, who gained fame for praising a motion picture, Brokeback Mountain, lionizing perversion as a normal and natural expression of "love."

As I noted just about six months ago in Catholic Cloning at Its Worst, there is indeed a network of sodomite-friendly bishops who have their roots in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles or the surrounding areas:

Undaunted by this decidedly un-saintly legacy, Pope Benedict XVI is continuing to clone the bad bishops who have already done so much to harm souls. The newly-designated Archbishop of San Francisco, the Most Revered George Hugh Niederauer, who has been the Bishop of Salt Lake City since January 25, 1995, is a classmate of one of the worst bishops in the world, Roger Cardinal Mahony, the Archbishop of Los Angeles. With the exception of the Most Reverend Patrick McGrath, the Bishop of San Jose who is a protege of the long-time Archbishop of San Francisco, the Most Reverend John R. Quinn, Californians from Orange County to San Francisco are governed by bishops whose appointments were engineered by Mahony. Bishop Tod David Brown of Orange graduated from the nest of perverts known as Saint John's Seminary in Camarillo, California, in 1963, a year after Mahony. Bishop Sylvester Ryan, the Bishop of Monterey who had an actual abortionist serve on his "priests' abuse advisory panel" a few years ago (see: Omissions of Fact Lead Meant to Mislead the Faithful and Stonewalling from Yet Another Bishop Ryan ), was created an Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles under Mahony in February of 1990. The Bishop of Stockton, the Most Reverend Stephen Blaire, was consecrated an Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles under Mahony on the same day as Sylvester Ryan, February 17, 1990, now serving in the same diocese where Mahony served for five years prior to his elevation to the See of Los Angeles in 1985. The disgraced former bishop of Santa Rosa, the Most Reverend George Patrick Ziemann, was created an Auxiliary Bishop by Mahony on December 23, 1986. The Bishop of Fresno, the Most Reverend John Thomas Steinbock, was classmate of Bishop Tod Brown's, that is, graduating a year after Mahony, in 1963. Do you see a pattern here? No wonder the State of California is a Catholic nightmare.

The Most Reverend Daniel Francis Walsh, the Bishop of Santa Rosa, who is at the heart of a major scandal involving a priest who has admitted engaging in perverted acts, hails from that other nest of sodomite-friendly priests, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, where he was ordained to the priesthood on March 30, 1963. He was consecrated an Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco on September 24, 1981, by Archbishop John Quinn, who had just a year before sought to urge the 1980 World Synod of Bishop to review Catholic teaching on contraception. A very pastoral prelate, you understand. Indeed, Quinn showed himself very "sensitive" to priests accused of molesting children. A 1995 report in the San Francisco Examiner detailed allegations made in a lawsuit at that time:

Friday, May 5, 1995, San Francisco Examiner

A new lawsuit charging child molestations by Monsignor Patrick O'Shea, former pastor of St. Cecilia Church, asks that a Superior Court judge order the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco to create formal safeguards against possible pedophile priests

.

"We're asking for the church to come up with some policy and guidelines to ensure that this doesn't happen again," said attorney Ruth Berkowitz, who filed the lawsuit for Wayne Presley, Matthew Hadden and Steven Lucarelli, who claim O'Shea sexually molested them when they were boys.

"I'd like psychological tests for the priests and a follow-up and monitoring of priests to make sure this doesn't happen," Berkowitz said. "It's unfortunate, (but) this is rampant."

The suit claims the Archdiocese and Archbishop John Quinn knew that O'Shea was molesting altar boys and other youths associated with the church, but did nothing to stop him.

Attorneys for O'Shea and the church said they have not been served with the lawsuit and would have no comment.

Berkowitz said the alleged molestations took place at least 20 years ago. Police investigators say O'Shea's alleged sexual abuse began in 1964 and continued into the 1980s.

The lawsuit says that the three plaintiffs are among nine men the San Francisco district attorney's office accused O'Shea of molesting in its 16-count criminal sexual molestation case filed last January.

O'Shea, 62, was arraigned on the allegations, then released on $15,000 bail. He remains in San Francisco awaiting trial on the charges.

Nine men sued O'Shea, Quinn and the church last May alleging they also were victims of the priest, who allegedly would get them drunk and then sexually abuse them in a trailer at Lake Berryessa in Napa County.

The latest suit by three more alleged victims was filed March 30, but sealed for 30 days and made public Thursday.

It accuses the church of "fraud, deceit, conspiracy" involving one of its high-ranking priests.

It asks that the church be required to pay closer attention to its priests, their private lives and to take action when it learns of deviant behavior.

"This case concerns a Roman Catholic priest who abused his power, trust and control over young boys and a Catholic Church which covered up the abuse," the complaint alleges. "This priest lured young boys, especially altar boys, to his weekend retreat."

In addition to the Lake Berryessa episodes, Lucarelli alleges that he was molested during a trip that he and O'Shea took together in a van from San Francisco to Mexico. He did not specify the year.

Archbishop Quinn, it should be pointed out, was on the cutting-edge of deviant theological explorations, being praised by none other than then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in 2001 for his belief that the papacy should be de-centralized. This report, written by Atila Sinke Guimarães of the November 30, 2001, edition of the Tradition in Action website, is quite instructive about the extent of the influence of men such as Quinn in the Vatican and why they got--and continue to get their way with respect to placing their fellow Modernists in episcopal sees:

RATZINGER PRAISES QUINN – While the Papacy is an essential element of the Church, there are many possible ways to decentralize governing functions in the Catholic Church, said Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. “Undoubtedly, regional forums which take on even some of the functions until now carried out by Rome are necessary,” the Cardinal said in a book-length interview with journalist Peter Seewald. The book "God and the World" by Ratzinger was published in German in October 2000 and was set for a late September release in Italy. In its September 13 edition the Italian Catholic magazine "Famiglia Cristiana" published the book’s chapter on the Papacy.

Seewald asked Ratzinger if he thought St. Peter would recognize today’s exercise of the papal office as having anything to do with his own exercise of authority over the infant Church. For instance, being head of the Vatican State, being a global voice for morality, writing encyclicals, naming Bishops throughout the world, how can a Pope find time for the prayer that must inspire his ministry? Seewald asked.

"Many of the things you listed can be changed,” the Cardinal responded. “One could discuss the ways in which forms of decentralization could lighten papal functions,” he stated, adding that in 1995 Pope John Paul II called for an ecumenical discussion on the exercise of the papal office. “Various voices already have been raised,” Ratzinger said. “Retired Archbishop [John R.] Quinn of San Francisco has vigorously argued for the need for decentralization. Certainly, much can be done in this area” (National Catholic Reporter, September 28, 2001).

For the blind-conservatives who still think that Ratzinger must be obeyed in everything he says, now there is this new repugnant plate: they have to swallow Quinn’s thesis with Ratzinger’s approval. Will the conservatives be able to digest the plate and remain obedient servants of the “infallible” Cardinal? I hope not. Will they finally suffer an indigestion that will make them realize the bad food they’ve been eating for some time now? I hope so.

Well, we know where the former Cardinal Ratzinger resides at present. His support for men such as Quinn, long after allegations had surfaced as to how he enabled perverted priests and long after his track record of placing the immutable moral teaching of Our Lord on the matter of marital fecundity into question, explains why such a prelate has such extraordinary influence in recommending men such as Daniel Walsh to be elevated to the episcopate.

Consider this excerpt from an article by Father Nicholas Lohkamp, O.F.M., in the December, 1982, edition of Catholic Update, discussing Archbishop Quinn's recommendations, made at the 1980 Synod of Bishops on the Family, concerning an "examination of the serious problems involved in the contraception question:"

San Francisco Archbishop John Quinn proposed a solution to this dilemma to the 1980 Synod: "that the Holy See initiate widespread and formal dialogue with Catholic theologians throughout the world on the problems raised by...dissent from the teaching of Humanae Vitae." He suggested a completely honest examination of the serious problems involved in the contraception question. Listening would be the first phase; those who disagreed would "be encouraged to a full expression of what constitutes the heart and the resolution of the problem. At the same time the theologians should be encouraged to listen in a spirit of faith and openness to the magisterium, to its position and assumptions."

Why was there any need for an "examination" of the binding teaching, contained in the immutable precepts of the Divine positive law and the natural law, against the use of contraception? There was no need for such an "examination." The lives and the souls of countless Catholics have been rent asunder as result of the moral anarchy wrought by Modernist Catholic theologians, who believe that they are laws unto themselves. Alas, this was the bent of Archbishop John Quinn, ever seeking to engage in "dialogue" with those who are open dissenters from the Received Teaching of Our Lord. And this is the bent, obviously, of the men he recommended to be elevated to the episcopate, who were formed in the conciliarist culture of "dialogue" and ambiguity.

It is interesting that one of Bishop Daniel Walsh's co-consecrators on was the notorious Bishop Joseph Anthony Ferrario, the Archbishop of Honolulu, Hawaii, from June 25, 1982, to October 12, 1993, a man who was known to be quite supportive of the homosexualist agenda--and who tried in 1991 to "excommunicate" six Catholics who assisted at Holy Mass offered by priests of the Society of Saint Pius X (a decision that was overturned in 1993 by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger as "lacking foundation"). Bishop Ferrario was consecrated by Archbishop John Quinn. One of Ferrario's co-consecrators, however, was Bishop James Clifford Timlin of Scranton, Pennsylvania, from which city Ferrario, who died in 2003, hailed originally. Timlin, who was co-consecrated in 1976 by none other than Archbishop John R. Queen, had his own record of protecting perverted priests--and the perverted Society of Saint John, which was exposed in large measure by the relentless work of Dr. Jeffrey Bond, starting in the latter part of 2001. Do you see a pattern of a support for and protection of perverted priests at work here? I am sure that Mrs. Engel's book details such "networking" quite extensively. Oh, yes, Bishop Walsh's other co-consecrator, the now-deceased Bishop Michael Kenny, was a native of Hollywood, California, who was a supporter of women's ordination. An awful lot of unorthodox influences at work.

Thus, the news that Bishop Daniel Walsh of the Diocese of Santa Rosa has let a priest escape to Mexico after admitting to him that he had molested a boy comes as no shock. It is simply par for the course in these sick times in which we are being chastised by a hierarchy full of sodomites and their fellow-travelers. One would think that a simple instinct for self-survival would motivate these bishops to act with alacrity, taking whatever measures they needed to take to make sure that spiritual and criminal felons do not get to take flight. A bishop who had the sensus Catholics would not only call the police himself but would tell a priest that he is not free to go anywhere until the police arrive to take him into custody.

Such, obviously, is not the case with Bishop Walsh. A letter written by San Diego pro-family activist Allyson Smith to Sonoma County District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua discusses this matter fully, indicating the sort of action that needs to be taken: the criminal prosecution of Bishop Daniel Walsh:

Stephan R. Passalacqua
District Attorney
County of Sonoma
600 Administration Drive, Room 212-J
Santa Rosa, California

Dear District Attorney Passalacqua,

I write to request that you prosecute Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh to the fullest possible extent of the law for failing to timely report minor sexual abuse by one of his priests, Father Xavier Ochoa, who has since escaped to Mexico.

According to a June 23, 2006 report by the Monterey Herald (included at end of this message), Ochoa on Friday, April 28 notified Bishop Walsh that he had sexually abused a 12-year-old boy. Charges your office has reportedly filed against Ochoa include sodomy, oral copulation and lewd conduct with a minor. Good luck prosecuting him now that he's south of the border.

However, instead of calling a 24-hour sexual abuse hotline — as required by diocesan policy — to immediately report the molestation, Bishop Walsh turned the matter over to diocesan attorney Dan Galvin who waited until Monday, May 1 to fax a letter to Child Protective Services and to notify the local Sheriff's department the following day, May 2 — allowing Ochoa plenty of time to beat feet.

The Monterey Herald further reported, "It was unlikely that church officials would face criminal charges for the tardy reporting, he [Passalacqua] said."

Why, DA Passalacqua? Why won't your office prosecute Santa Rosa Catholic Church officials for failing to timely report minor sexual abuse? Your office should and must prosecute. The innocence of children — among the most vulnerable members of our society, who deserve love, advocacy and protection — is at stake here. Perverted priests, fully cognizant of their actions, who violate children's innocence must be prosecuted and removed from situations where they have access to juveniles — not coddled and let off the hook — especially by law enforcement.

Do you accept the explanations of Santa Rosa diocesan personnel at face value, when the explosion of child abuse in this country — and particularly the Catholic Church in recent years — begs further investigation and harsh punishment? I pray not.

The Monterey Herald also states Ochoa, ordained as a Jesuit (a term nowadays synonymous with active homosexuality) "is the 17th priest from the diocese to be accused of molesting a total of 62 children. In all, the diocese has paid or promised to pay dozens of people nearly $20 million since 1990."

Today's Catholic priesthood is riddled with homosexuals. Homosexuals recruit and molest kids. They must be stopped. But the abuse of innocents by perverted sodomites will not stop until their bishops are held fully accountable by law enforcement.

Stephan Passalacqua, you have an unprecedented opportunity here to do the right thing. Please do it.

I urge you in the strongest possible terms to hold Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh to account — and to prevent further molestation of innocent young boys — by prosecuting him for failing to report Fr. Xavier Ochoa's admitted sexual abuse in a timely manner.

Thank you.

Allyson Smith
San Diego, CA

Mrs. Smith's recommendation for criminal prosecution of Bishop Daniel Walsh deserves our full support. Each of us should write our own letters to Sonoma County District Attorney Stephen Passalacqua to demand such prosecution.

More to the point, however, is that Bishop Daniel Walsh will remain in "good standing" to molest souls. The Vatican will not remove him. The Vatican will not reprimand him. He will remain in power to continue his protection of the culture of sodomy that has become part and parcel of the Catholic episcopate in California and in many other parts of the nation. Bishop Walsh will not be removed in part because he is protected by so many powerful forces in this country and in Rome itself, including Cardinal Levada. And Bishop Walsh will not be removed in large measure because the conciliarist novelty of episcopal collegiality mandates that anything but anything is preferable, including open threats to the spiritual and physical well-being of Catholics (and the scandals caused as a result that weaken the Faith of Catholics and keep non-Catholics out of the true Church), to publicly embarrassing a diocesan ordinary. Need it be pointed out how Bernard Cardinal Law, who escaped criminal prosecution in Boston, Massachusetts, for his own sordid role in protected perverted priests, costing the Catholics of the Archdiocese of Boston, untold millions upon millions of dollars, was rewarded by the late Pope John Paul II for his malfeasance with the title of Archpriest of Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome?

Once upon a time, ladies and gentlemen, we had popes who governed. Once upon a time, ladies and gentlemen, we had civil states whose leaders understood their responsibility to cooperate with the Church to help safeguard the good of souls, upon rests the entirety of social order, as Popes Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII, St. Pius X, and Pius XI never tired of reminding Catholics in their masterful encyclical letters. The remedy for the infestation, if not diabolical infiltration, of perverts into the Catholic priesthood was provided by Pope Saint Pius V.

The following is a translation of a Papal Bull issued by Pope Saint Pius V that appeared on the Tradition in Action webiste--and was brought to my attention in an e-mail distributed by Mrs. Kathy Heckenkamp of the Our Lady of Good Success Apostolate to her list. While neither the Church or the civil state will take the action prescribed above, Pope Saint Pius V understood all too well that those obsessed with perverse "pleasures" would only be deterred from persisting in their vices by the threat of execution itself:

[A Foreword from the Tradition in Action website] "In the Renaissance the vice of homosexuality again became prominent. This was a matter of great concern to Pope St. Pius V. For this reason, he wrote several important documents against it beginning in the first year of his pontificate. The most important is the Constitution Horrendum illud scelus, whose central text we reproduce below.

"In our days of moral relaxation and liberalization of customs, we are witnessing a shameful complacence of the religious authority - even the highest - toward the vice of homosexuality in the clergy and seminaries.

"We consider it quite opportune to bring to mind those perennial, unchanging principles expressed by St. Pius V in his Apostolic Constitution. Perhaps they will open some eyes to see the depths of the abyss into which we have fallen."

St. Pius V

That horrible crime, on account of which corrupt and obscene cities were destroyed by fire through divine condemnation, causes us most bitter sorrow and shocks our mind, impelling us to repress such a crime with the greatest possible zeal.

Quite opportunely the Fifth Lateran Council [1512-1517] issued this decree: "Let any member of the clergy caught in that vice against nature . . . be removed from the clerical order or forced to do penance in a monastery (chap. 4, X, V, 31). So that the contagion of such a grave offense may not advance with greater audacity by taking advantage of impunity, which is the greatest incitement to sin, and so as to more severely punish the clerics who are guilty of this nefarious crime and who are not frightened by the death of their souls, we determine that they should be handed over to the severity of the secular authority, which enforces civil law.

Therefore, wishing to pursue with the greatest rigor that which we have decreed since the beginning of our pontificate, we establish that any priest or member of the clergy, either secular or regular, who commits such an execrable crime, by force of the present law be deprived of every clerical privilege, of every post, dignity and ecclesiastical benefit, and having been degraded by an ecclesiastical judge, let him be immediately delivered to the secular authority to be put to death, as mandated by law as the fitting punishment for laymen who have sunk into this abyss."

(Constitutionn Horrendum illud scelus, August 30, 1568, in Bullarium Romanum, Rome: Typographia Reverendae Camerae Apostolicae, Mainardi, 1738, chap. 3, p. 3

Too harsh? Consider these words from Saint Paul himself:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in injustice: Because that which is known of God is manifest in them. For God hath manifested it unto them. For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity: so that they are inexcusable.

Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened. For professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man, and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts, and of creeping things. Wherefore God gave them up to the desires of their heart, unto uncleanness, to dishonour their own bodies among themselves. Who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error. And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness, full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers, Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy. Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them.  (Romans 1: 18-32)

Saint Paul himself said that those who do such things are "worthy of death." Undeterred, however, those with shameful affections, from whom God has withdrawn His graces, persist in their evil and "consent to them that do them," which describes the exact attitude of the hierarchy in the United States of America and elsewhere in the world as priests, men who have been ordained to image the God-Man in order to sanctify and thus to save the souls for whom He gave up His very life on the wood of the Holy Cross, have been permitted to molest souls with false worship and rotten doctrine, making them all the more prone to persist unrepentantly in the molestation of bodies that is the logical consequence of the molestation of souls by false worship and bad doctrine.

The answer, of course, is in Our Lady's loving hands. She will see us through this dark night as those who lay claim to ecclesiastical power are permitted to molest both bodies and souls. Our Lady will help us, first of all, by remembering that the Church is indeed divinely founded and maintained, that the jaws of Hell will never prevail against her. She will help us by reminding us that our sins have played their own decided role in the worsening of the state of the Church Militant on earth and thus of the state of the world-at-large. She will help us by keeping us at the foot of the Cross with her at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. She will help us by reminding us that the final victory belongs to her Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, to which we must be totally consecrated, offering to the Blessed Trinity all that happens to the Church and to us through the Heart from which the Most Sacred Heart of the Divine Redeemer was formed and is forever united in a perfect communion of love. Our Lady will help us to do reparation for our sins and those of the whole world by leading us to spend time before her Divine Son in His Real Presence, where He beckons us as the Prisoner of Love Incarnate just as much as He was the Prisoner of Love Incarnate in her virginal and immaculate womb for nine months. We must rely upon Our Lady, she who is our life, our sweetness, and our hope, without ever once becoming discouraged.

The petty, self-seeking men who have dared to falsify Catholic worship and doctrine, thereby exposing Catholics and others to scandals beyond all telling, will pass from the scene. We will indeed have the likes of Saints Pius V and Pius X on the Throne of Saint Peter once again. We may not live to see that day. May we never give up our efforts as Our Lady's consecrated slaves to bring this about by planting a few seeds for the restoration of Tradition in the Church and Christendom in the world.

The Longer Version of the Saint Michael the Archangel Prayer, composed by Pope Leo XIII, 1888

O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil.  Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil.  Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with  the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven.  That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.  Behold this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage.  Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay, and cast into eternal perdition, souls destined for the crown of eternal glory.  That wicked dragon pours out. as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.  These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on Her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck the sheep may be scattered.  Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory.  They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious powers of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude.  Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church.  Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations.  Amen.

Verse: Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.

Response: The Lion of the Tribe of Juda has conquered the root of David.

Verse: Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.

Response: As we have hoped in Thee.

Verse: O Lord hear my prayer.

Response: And let my cry come unto Thee.

Verse: Let us pray.  O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as suppliants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin, immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all other unclean spirits, who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of our souls.

Response:  Amen.

A Prayer in Honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore Thee, I love Thee and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer Thee this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Thy will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in Thee and for Thee. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Thy blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Within Thy Heart I place my every care. In every need let me come to Thee with humble trust saying, Heart of Jesus help me.

Merciful Jesus, I consecrate myself today and always to Thy Most Sacred Heart.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus I implore, that I may ever love Thee more and more.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Thy love for me.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy Kingdom Come.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, convert sinners, save the dying, deliver the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
